Work to resurface more than 2 miles of Cheddar Gorge has finished. The task, completed by contractors Heidelberg Materials, involved removing around 1,300 tonnes of spent asphalt, taking it to the Whatley quarry near Frome for recycling and replacing it with new.

Much of the work was overnight, in order to minimise disruption. Where possible, lorries taking old asphalt to Whatley were able to return with new, reducing the carbon footprint of the job.

Tim Doyle, Somerset Framework Manager at Heidelberg Materials UK, says: "The B3135 through Cheddar Gorge is one of the most scenic roads in the country. The successful completion of the scheme, on time and on budget, is testament to the strong partnership with have developed with Somerset Council through our term maintenance contract."

Cheddar, Axbridge and Shipham campaign Graham Godwin-Pearson says, 'It's fantastic to see such efficiency from Heidelberg, working at night to resurface the Gorge, especially beating timeframe and budget expectations."

We would like to see the Magic Roundabout remodelled, the Cheddar Recycling Centre relocated to a nearby location, a potential one-way system in Axbridge and an average speed camera on the Axbridge bypass.

Finally sorting out the problems of the Gorge

Cheddar Gorge should be an asset for the local community, rather than a distraction. Our discussions with the police include the potential closure of the Gorge to traffic at certain times over the weekends and installing noise cameras that penalise drivers in deliberately noisy cars, as well as a more visible police presence.
