Petition: No traveller's camp on Axbridge Bypass

Over the last few weeks, we have heard from dozens of Axbridge Residents concerned about plans to develop the bottom of Fry's Hill, creating a travellers' camp adjacent to the bypass behind Axbridge. Now that the window to comment has closed, it's down to a small committee within the council to decide.

The site is within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, bordered on the south side by the A371 and by the tree line to the north, which includes a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Residents have serious concerns about the impact of such a development on the wildlife and special nature of the hillside, the access to a stretch of road that is 60mph, the treatment of sewage on the site and the potential for expansion. There is also a danger of setting a precedent of development on the north side of the A371.

Axbridge campaigner Graham Godwin-Pearson says, "This is the wrong location for any development of any kind". He plans to attend the planning committee meeting in early June and present the following petition.
