Lidl has today submitted a planning application for a new store on land west of Upper New Road, Cheddar.

The proposed development on the Upper New Road east of the Bloor Homes development, opposite the new Tower Road, will include a modern-looking Lidl supermarket, customer car parking, servicing facilities, landscaping and associated works.

The application follows a public consultation during which more than 2,000 local residents have engaged with the proposals. Lidl says feedback highlighted support for increased shopping choice, improved competition and access to a discount supermarket closer to home.

If approved, the development would create new jobs and represent a substantial investment in the local economy. Lidl has stated that it continues to expand across the UK and sees Cheddar as an important location serving both existing residents and planned future housing growth in the area.

The application will now be considered by Somerset Council, with residents, businesses and local organisations invited to comment as part of the formal planning process. Issues likely to be examined include traffic, access, pedestrian connectivity, visual impact and the relationship of the development to existing retail provision in Cheddar and Axbridge.

A decision on the application will be made following consultation and assessment by planning officers.
