The Strawberry Line is in the running to be crowned Britain’s favourite path. The path, which follows the route of the former railway, has been shortlisted in a national public vote celebrating the UK’s most popular traffic-free routes.
The recognition reflects years of work by volunteers, local authorities and landowners to transform the disused railway into a safe, accessible route enjoyed by thousands of walkers, cyclists, runners and families every year.
The route already stretches from Yatton railway station to Labourham Way in Cheddar, with ambitions to extend it further south to Shepton Mallet, providing opportunities for sustainable travel, leisure and tourism, linking communities across the county while reducing reliance on the car.
Local campaigner Graham Godwin-Pearson says, "The Strawberry Line has become far more than a cycle path. It is a valuable community asset that supports healthier lifestyles, encourages visitors to explore the beautiful Somerset countryside and provides a safe, off-road alternative for everyday journeys.
"Whether people are enjoying a leisurely stroll, a family bike ride or using it to commute, the route has become an important part of our area’s identity. A national award would be fitting recognition for everyone who has helped create and maintain this much-loved path, while shining a spotlight on Somerset as a destination for walking, cycling and outdoor recreation."
