Cheddar Reservoir has been temporarily closed to the public because of the forecast of extreme heat, with access to the permissive footpath and both car parks suspended until temperatures ease. Bristol Water says the decision is part of its established safety policy during periods of exceptional hot weather, when large numbers of visitors are expected.
In a statement, the company has apologised for the inconvenience and says the closure will be lifted once conditions are considered safe.
Local campaigner Graham Godwin-Pearson says, "While disappointing for those who walk the res regularly, it is an operational site with deep water, hidden machinery and strong currents, making swimming - which is therefore never permitted - particularly dangerous.
"Previous heatwaves have led to large unauthorised gatherings, increased attempts to enter the water and additional pressure on emergency services."
The reservoir will be closed from midnight tonight until Monday morning.
