If you've ever wondered where the lorries emerging from Venns Gate are coming from, Batts Combe Quarry is opening its gates to the public this weekend, offering a rare opportunity to see one of Somerset’s most important working quarries up close.
Visitors will be able to take guided minibus tours around the site, learn how limestone is extracted and used in everyday construction, explore displays on local geology and wildlife, and meet industry specialists.
The open day will also raise money for the Cheddar Youth Trust, supporting opportunities for young people in the village.
Local campaigner Graham Godwin-Pearson was on the Batts Combe liaison committee in the Sedgemoor District Council days. He says, "Batts Combe is a fascinating site and the open day is a rare opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at an industry that has helped shape both the landscape and economy of Cheddar for generations."
The open day is 10am - 3pm on Saturday 25th. Tickets are £2.50 for over 12s (under 12s go free) and can be booked through Heidelberg Materials here.
