Somerset Council published plans for a gypsy and traveller site on the old lavender fields behind Axbridge in March - an area within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, bordered on the south side by the A371 and by the tree line to the north, which includes a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Residents have expressed concerns about the impact of such a development on the wildlife and special nature of the hillside, the access to a stretch of road that is 60mph, the treatment of sewage on the site and the potential for expansion. There is also a danger of setting a precedent of development on the north side of the A371.
Axbridge campaigner Graham Godwin-Pearson says, "This is the wrong location for any development of any kind. The hills to the north of Axbridge are extremely special and need to be protected - hence they are part of the AONB."
If you also oppose the plans, sign the petition below, which Graham will present to the relevant planning committee.
